What Information Is Needed to Create a Canadian Nutrition Facts Table?
A practical checklist of the recipe, ingredient, serving-size and processing information needed for nutrition analysis and Canadian label preparation.

Preparing an accurate Canadian Nutrition Facts table begins with complete and reliable product information. Nutrition values may be calculated from recipe and ingredient data using credible databases or software when that approach is suitable for the product. The manufacturer remains responsible for ensuring that the declared values accurately represent the food. Providing complete information at the beginning helps reduce questions, revisions and delays. The following checklist explains the main information normally needed before nutrition analysis and Canadian label preparation can begin.
Complete Recipe or Product Formulation
Provide every ingredient used in the product and the exact quantity of each ingredient by weight. Include water, oils, seasonings, processing aids and ingredients used in small amounts. State the total batch size and identify whether the quantities are measured before or after processing. For products with more than one flavour or formulation, provide a separate recipe for each version.
Ingredient Specifications and Sub-Ingredients
Provide the product specification, Nutrition Facts information or supplier data for each purchased ingredient. For compound ingredients such as sauces, chocolate, seasoning blends or fillings, include their complete component ingredients. Identify the source of any allergens, gluten or added sulphites. Brand names alone are usually not enough because formulations can differ between suppliers.
Serving Size and Finished Product Yield
Provide the proposed serving size, the number of servings produced by the recipe and the finished product yield or batch weight. Include any cooking, drying, draining or other processing losses, as these details can affect the nutrient values per serving.
Processing and Preparation Details
Describe how the product is prepared, including cooking, baking, frying, drying, draining, dilution or reconstitution. Provide processing temperatures, times and any known changes in weight or moisture, because these factors may affect the final nutrient values.
Intended Market and Label Format
Identify where the product will be sold—Canada, the United States or another market. Labelling formats and regulatory requirements vary by country. For Canadian products, also indicate whether English–French information and a front-of-package nutrition-symbol assessment are required.
Additional Product and Label Information
Provide the product name, package size, ingredient list, allergen information and any existing label artwork. Also identify any nutrient-content claims, preparation directions or special statements you intend to place on the package.
What Happens After You Submit the Information?
We review the information for completeness, identify any missing details and confirm the intended market and services required. Once the information is complete, nutrition analysis and label preparation can begin. Laboratory testing may be recommended when calculation alone is unsuitable for the product.
